Two great quotes from Richard Branson in Megan's blog:
"Wine, like life, is meant to be enjoyed," said Branson. "All the pomp and ceremony currently associated with wine just gets in the way of enjoying it."
"Dare to enjoy this wine without dashes of pretentiousness or hints of snootiness. Virgin Vines believes wine should be all about having fun and loving the taste ... not waxing poetically about meaningless wine-speak and food pairings."
YES!!!!!

I agree - that wine can be too serious and wanky, but some people enjoy a good wank (literal and metaphorical) and so let them have their pretension and obsess about wine and food matches.
There is room for fun everyday easy drinking, non thinking wine (critter labels, Virgin wine) - but there will always be a place for wine that needs to be thought about and talked about.

I would agree with you if I the latter didn't become a hindrance for people to do the former. The snobbery that comes with "talking about wine" drives many people away.
